The bridge was built in 1869 to connect Leeds New Station to an existing railway line to Selby. The Bridge is part of a mile ling railway viaduct, mainly of brick arches but in some places girder bridges as is the case here.

What was then New Station has now greatly expanded and is now Leeds City Station.
