Deze monumentale Gingko Biloba (Japanse Notenboom) staat in de voormalige Hortus Botanicus van Harderwijk. De boom heeft een stamomtrek van 3,98 m en is 20 m hoog.

Een hardnekkige mythe rondom deze boom is dat Carl Linnaeus hem in 1735 zou hebben geplant tijdens zijn promotie aan de Harderwijkse universiteit. Dit is echter zeer onwaarschijnlijk omdat de eerste ginkgo's pas rond 1750 in Europa verschenen en Linnaeus er zelf ook niks over vermeldt. Een ander punt is de rondreis door Nederland van de Duitse botanicus Ehrhart in 1782. De Duitser bezocht onder andere de Horti Botanici van Utrecht, Leiden en Harderwijk. In Utrecht beschrijft hij een ginkgo van 3 à 4 meter hoog terwijl hij in Harderwijk géén melding maakt van deze boomsoort, die in die tijd toch zeker als een curiositeit werd beschouwd, waaruit je zou kunnen concluderen dat de boom er toen nog niet stond. In 1811 werd de universiteit opgeheven maar de Hortus werd nog een tijdje opengehouden omdat Harderwijk hoopte op een vervangende medische opleiding. Maar de gemeente kon de kosten voor het onderhoud van de Hortus moeilijk opbrengen. In 1821 werden daarom de kassen en een groot gedeelte van de plantencollectie verkocht, maar de medicinale planten werden zoveel mogelijk behouden. Aangezien de ginkgo bekend stond om zijn medicinale werking is de boom mogelijk daardoor voor Harderwijk behouden. (Alfred Huizinga, 2019)

Door een foto uit 1914 te vergelijken met een recente foto, die vanuit hetzelfde standpunt is genomen, kan bij benadering de omtrek in 1914 berekend worden (ongeveer 175 cm). In het boek Monumentale Bomen in Nederland van Gerrit de Graaff uit 1991 wordt een omtrekmeting van 310 cm vermeld (waarschijnlijk is dat een meting uit 1990). Tijdens de storm van 18 januari 2018 is de top eruit gewaaid.

A persistent myth surrounding this tree is that Carl Linnaeus would have planted it in 1735 during his PhD at Harderwijk University. However, this is very unlikely because the first ginkgos only appeared in Europe around 1750 and Linnaeus himself does not mention anything about them. Another point is the tour of the Netherlands by the German botanist Ehrhart in 1782. The German visited, among others, the Horti Botanici of Utrecht, Leiden and Harderwijk. In Utrecht he describes a ginkgo of 3 to 4 meters high, while in Harderwijk he makes no mention of this tree species, which was certainly considered a curiosity at the time, from which you could conclude that the tree was not there yet. The university was closed in 1811, but the Hortus was kept open for a while because Harderwijk hoped for a replacement medical education. But the municipality could hardly afford the costs of maintaining the Hortus. In 1821 the greenhouses and a large part of the plant collection were therefore sold, but the medicinal plants were preserved as much as possible. Since the ginkgo was known for its medicinal effect, the tree may have been preserved for Harderwijk. (Alfred Huizinga, 2019)

By comparing a photograph from 1914 with a recent photograph taken from the same position, the approximate circumference in 1914 can be calculated (approximately 175 cm). In the 1991 book Monumental Trees in the Netherlands by Gerrit de Graaff, a circumference measurement of 310 cm is mentioned (probably a measurement from 1990). During the storm of January 18, 2018, the top was blown out.
