Recia construcción levantada en piedra en dos fases constructivas. La primera, en torno a 1543 corresponde a la intervención de Juan de Saravia, maestro de obras de Rodrigo Gil de Hontañón en la cerca iglesia de Santiago de Cigales.
En 1585 se hace cargo Alonso de Tolosa, que termina la obra en estilo más cercano al clasicismo herreriano realizando el remate de los pies con un sotocoro dividido por pilastras en tres espacios y dos tramos y el cierre de los pies. En 1645 se le añade la impresionante escalinata que la une con la parte baja de la población.
Se trata de un edificio de estética gótica. Su estructura presenta una cruz latina con los brazos del crucero poco desarrollados. Al interior muestra una sola nave, dividida en dos tramos y coro alto con sotocoro a los pies.
Su cabecera dibuja un plano poligonal con contrafuertes al exterior que se corresponden con cubierta de crucería estrellada de la capilla mayor, precedida por un amplio tramo presbiteral y cierre con un arco triunfal apuntado.
La nave central y los cruceros presentan cubiertas de crucería con terceletes, reforzadas al exterior por contrafuertes. Esta cubrición se repite en el baptisterio, situado en el lateral del Evangelio y en su interior se conserva la pila bautismal procedente de San Miguel desde la orden dada por el visitador del obispado en 1618.
Su estética, por tanto, refleja un goticismo tardío en consonancia con sus detalles, como los ventanales, de medio punto con apoyos fasciculados típicos de obras tardo medievales, en clara evolución estética a formas más modernas.
Strong construction raised in stone in two construction phases. The first, around 1543, corresponds to the intervention of Juan de Saravia, master builder of Rodrigo Gil de Hontañón in the nearby church of Santiago de Cigales.
In 1585 Alonso de Tolosa took over, finishing the work in a style closer to Herrera's classicism, finishing off the feet with a sotochoro divided by pilasters into three spaces and two sections and closing the feet. In 1645 the impressive staircase that joins it with the lower part of the population was added.
It is a building with a Gothic aesthetic. Its structure presents a Latin cross with the arms of the transept little developed. The interior shows a single nave, divided into two sections and a high choir with a sotochoro at the foot.
Its header draws a polygonal plane with buttresses on the outside that correspond to the star-shaped ribbed roof of the main chapel, preceded by a wide presbyteral section and closing with a pointed triumphal arch.
The central nave and the transepts have ribbed roofs with tiercerons, reinforced on the outside by buttresses. This covering is repeated in the baptistery, located on the side of the Gospel and inside the baptismal font from San Miguel from the order given by the visitor of the bishopric in 1618.
Its aesthetic, therefore, reflects a late Gothic style in keeping with its details, such as the semicircular windows with fasciculated supports typical of late medieval works, in a clear aesthetic evolution to more modern forms.
