"Geschiedenis van het Van Brakellhofje
Het Van Brakellhofje oogt als een eenheid, maar die eenheid bestaat pas sinds 1971, dankzij een forse bouw- en stedenkundige ingreep op initiatief van de Gestichten (van Weldadigheid) Doesburg.

Oorspronkelijk bevond zich op dit terrein tussen de Veerpoortstraat en de Waterstraat een huis van de Broeders van het Gemene Leven (ook Fraters genoemd), die in 1426 uit Zwolle naar Doesburg waren gekomen. Na eerst een huis gehuurd te hebben kochten zij in 1429 een huis, dat lag tussen de Veerpoortstraat en de Waterstraat. Na amper twintig jaar verlieten zij dit pand alweer onder andere vanwege de vele herbergen in de Veerpoortstraat.

Het door de Fraters verlaten huis werd, dankzij de inspanningen van Evert van Bingerden – een telg uit een eeuwenoud adellijk geslacht -, bestemd voor armlastige weduwen, voor wie een weldadige stichting in het leven werd geroepen. Het poortje links naast Veerpoortstraat 20, het zogenaamde saterspoortje, gaf toegang tot dit Weduwenhuis. Aan de westkant van het Hofje is nog steeds een muur van dit Weduwenhuis te zien. Toen het Weduwenhuis werd verplaatst in 1811 kwam het huis in bezit van Stadscommandant Luitenant-kolonel W. de Vaynes van Brakell, wiens geslacht afkomstig was uit de Franse regio Dauphiné. In november 1813 bracht hij, met gevaar voor eigen leven, de Franse bezetters tot bedaren door een kolonelshoed met de Franse kokarde (een onderscheidingsteken in de nationale kleuren op hoed of muts), op te zetten, waarmee hij een beroep deed op het Franse eergevoel. Hij voorkwam de plundering van de stad en werd de naamgever van het Hofje. Een klein bronzen beeld van de hand van Pieter Snijders vormt een eerbetoon aan hem."

"History of the Van Brakellhofje
The Van Brakellhofje looks like a unit, but that unit has only existed since 1971, thanks to a major construction and urban planning intervention at the initiative of the Gestichting (van Benevolence) Doesburg.

Originally, on this site between the Veerpoortstraat and the Waterstraat, there was a house belonging to the Broeders van het Gemene Leven (also called Brothers), who had come to Doesburg from Zwolle in 1426. After first renting a house, they bought a house in 1429, which was located between the Veerpoortstraat and the Waterstraat. After barely twenty years they left this building, partly because of the many inns in the Veerpoortstraat.

Thanks to the efforts of Evert van Bingerden - a descendant of an ancient noble family - the house abandoned by the Brothers was intended for poor widows, for whom a beneficent foundation was created. The gate to the left of Veerpoortstraat 20, the so-called satyr's gate, gave access to this Widow's House. A wall of this Widow's House can still be seen on the west side of the Hofje. When the Widows' House was moved in 1811, the house came into the possession of City Commander Lieutenant Colonel W. de Vaynes van Brakell, whose family originated from the French region of Dauphiné. In November 1813, at the risk of his own life, he pacified the French occupiers by donning a colonel's hat with the French cockade (an insignia in the national colors on a hat or cap), thus appealing to the French sense of honor . He prevented the plunder of the city and became the namesake of the Hofje. A small bronze statue by Pieter Snijders is a tribute to him."
