The marker is made of metal with a silver background and black lettering. It is about 5 feet tall. It was erected by the West Virginia Department of Culture and History in 1979. It is located on Ireland Rock Cave Road, Rock Cave WV

Upshur Militia
While at drill here on Sept. 12, 1863, a company of 70 Upshur County militia under Daniel Gould was captured by a force of Confederates under Major J. K. Kesler. Seven escaped, 25 paroled, and 38 died in captivity.
