The sign says, "Try to picture molten rock, or magma, lying deep within the earth's crust. After millions of years it cools and solidifies into a rock mass, called a batholith. This mass is large enough to make up several mountain ranges. It also happens to be buried in a geologically active zone where gigantic pieces of the earth's crust are colliding with one another. Slowly, through long-term fault activity the huge batholith is pushed upward. As it rises, wind and water wear away the overlying rock.
Today you can see a portion of the batholith. In fact, you are standing on it! Welcome to Mount San Jacinto State Park and State Wilderness, named for the highest point in the Peninsular Ranges."
