Gladstone was originally just west of the cemetery, and you can still see the ruins of the original school building (later a church) and the Pony Express station. The town was established in 1880 by William H. Harris, who wished to form a religious colony and named the town after English statesman William E. Gladstone. The town eventually moved to its present-day location northwest of the cemetery. The cemetery is still acctive, with several burials in the last decade.
