Actualmente, está considerada como BIC (Bien de Interés Cultural, con número de identificación RI-51-0000828) y fue declarada Monumento histórico-artístico perteneciente al Tesoro Artístico Nacional mediante decreto de 3 de junio de 1931. El templo tiene también la distinción de "Real Santuario", desde que le fue concedida en el año 2000, por merced de Su Majestad el Rey D. Juan Carlos I de España.
Pontevedra no es sede de obispado, pertenece a la diócesis de Santiago, por lo que no hay en ella una catedral. Quizás por esta razón la iglesia, hoy basílica de Santa María, es considerada como la iglesia principal de Pontevedra.
Se trata de un edificio de estilo gótico, con influencias del estilo manuelino portugués.3?
Externamente destacan sus fachadas. La principal, orientada a oeste, presenta una amplia escalinata para acceder a ella. Tiene estructura en forma de retablo, con tres cuerpos abundantemente decorados (siguiendo el estilo plateresco), obra del maestro Cornielis de Holanda y Juan Noble, y datada en 1541.? La puerta se sitúa en el cuerpo central y presenta un arco de medio punto enmarcado por las esculturas de San Pedro y San Pablo. En la parte superior a la puerta se puede contemplar un relieve de la dormición de la Santísima Virgen; y por encima de él decoración sobre la base de medallones en forma de conchas de vieiras, así como esculturas de santos, personajes bíblicos e incluso históricos; y, todavía más alto, un rosetón (responsable de la iluminación del espacio interior), simbolismo del cielo. La fachada se ve coronada por un Calvario y por último la crestería típica del estilo manuelino portugués.? Como dato anecdótico comentar que entre las figuras de los santos que aparecen en la decoración de esta fachada, se pueden distinguir los bustos de Cristóbal Colón y Hernán Cortés que están situados a los lados del rosetón.

Currently, it is considered a BIC (Asset of Cultural Interest, with identification number RI-51-0000828) and was declared a Historic-Artistic Monument belonging to the National Artistic Treasure by decree of June 3, 1931. The temple also has the distinction of "Royal Sanctuary", since it was granted in the year 2000, by the mercy of His Majesty King D. Juan Carlos I of Spain.
Pontevedra is not the seat of a bishopric, it belongs to the diocese of Santiago, so there is no cathedral in it. Perhaps for this reason the church, today the Basilica of Santa María, is considered the main church of Pontevedra.
It is a Gothic-style building, with influences from the Portuguese Manueline style.3
Externally, its facades stand out. The main one, facing west, has a wide staircase to access it. It has an altarpiece-shaped structure, with three abundantly decorated bodies (following the Plateresque style), the work of the master Cornielis de Holanda and Juan Noble, and dated 1541. The door is located in the central body and has a semicircular arch framed by the sculptures of Saint Peter and Saint Paul. In the upper part of the door you can see a relief of the dormition of the Blessed Virgin; and above it decoration on the basis of medallions in the form of scallop shells, as well as sculptures of saints, biblical and even historical figures; and, even higher, a rose window (responsible for lighting the interior space), symbolism of the sky. The façade is crowned by a Calvary and finally the typical cresting of the Portuguese Manueline style. As an anecdotal fact, comment that among the figures of the saints that appear in the decoration of this façade, the busts of Christopher Columbus and Hernán can be distinguished Courteous that are located on the sides of the rose window.
