This statue of Scotland's national poet Robert Burns is situated in the centre of Dundee at Albert Square on the western side of the McManus Gallery & Museum.
Robert Burns was Scotland's national poet, and was born on January 25th 1759 and died on July 21st 1796. He visited Dundee only on the one occasion.
The bronze statue is by Sir John Steell and was unveiled in October 1880. It is one of four by Sir John Steell, the others being in London, New York, and Dunedin. The statue sits above a plinth of red Peterhead granite which contains a verse in fading gold lettering from the 1789 poem 'To Mary In Heaven' which reads as follows:
'THOU LING'RING STAR, WITH LESSENING RAY
THAT LOV'ST TO GREET THE EARLY MORN
AGAIN THOU USHER'ST IN THE DAY
MY MARY FROM MY SOUL WAS TORN'
