Mary Cassatt was born near Pittsburgh, PA in 1844, grew up in the Philadelphia area, where she briefly attended the Philadelphia Academy of the Fine Arts, but spent most of her adult life in France. This particular painting was completed during a winter vacation on the French Riviera. The oil-on-canvas painting is characterized by bold colors and geometric shapes effected by the placement of the sailboat and the horizon. It is one of Cassatt’s largest works and has been prominently displayed in the National Gallery in Washington, DC since 1963.

The stamp was issued in 1966 and continued a theme of honoring American artists on commemorative postage stamps that began in 1961 with Frederic Remington and had included such notables as Winslow Homer and C. M. Russell among others.
