This iconic structure has been mesmerizing beachgoers for almost 90 years. Its nickname is "The Pencil". The architectural inspiration for its design is the bell tower of St. Mark's Basilica Campanite, Venice, 1514. This tower is more than a monument, it's a fully functional water tower supplying the park with all its fresh water.
Interesting facts:
It was completed in 1930. Designed in 1929 by Architect Herbert Magoon, AIA. Engineers AE Howland & W. Earl Andrews. LIPC President Robert Moses(final Approval). The roof is made of copper and is 32 feet high. The tower is made of Ohio sandstone and Barbizon brick. It measures 231 feet tall, extending more than 1000 feet underground and 25 feet wide. It holds 315,000 gallons of fresh water pumped from three wells.
