The ill-fated Burke & Wills expedition camped at this site on Wednesday September 5, 1860, 16 days after leaving Melbourne on their way to the Gulf of Carpentaria, The camp-site is on an ancient flood-way of the Avoca River and at the time of the expedition in 1860 was a green belt of box trees and other native shrubs, making it an ideal sheltered camping site.
Many of the original trees have been removed but, the work of the Burke and Wills Clump Sub-committee has stabilised the condition of the remaining trees. A number of saltbush and box tree saplings have been planted in an effort to revegetate the area.
