Según The Art Newspaper, basándose en datos facilitados por los propios museos, el Teatro-Museo Dalí fue el tercer museo más visitado en España en 2017, con 1 207 149 visitantes, situándose en el puesto número 40 de su ranking de los 100 museos de arte del mundo más visitados.? Debido a su gran afluencia de público y a su gestión comercial, es posiblemente el único museo español que se autofinancia enteramente con sus propios ingresos.
Está gestionado por la Fundación Gala-Salvador Dalí. El artista legó en su testamento una enorme cantidad de obras de arte al Estado español, que se repartieron entre este museo y el Museo Reina Sofía de Madrid. El repertorio expuesto en Figueras se ha ido enriqueciendo posteriormente con adquisiciones efectuadas por la Fundación.
El edificio del Museo Dalí es un monumento del municipio de Figueras incluido en el inventario del Patrimonio Arquitectónico de Cataluña. El espacio que actualmente ocupa el Teatro-Museo Dalí fue, durante muchos años, el antiguo Teatro Municipal de Figueras o Teatro Principal de Figueras, construido entre 1848 y 1850 por el arquitecto catalán Josep Roca i Bros. Fue un edificio neoclásico financiado por las clases altas de la ciudad, en el marco de la estrategia de legitimación pública que llevó a cabo la burguesía decimonónica, a través, principalmente, de la remodelación de instituciones culturales y artísticas. Su construcción es paralela, ideológicamente hablando, al Eixample barcelonés o a la Ringstrasse de Viena.
According to The Art Newspaper, based on data provided by the museums themselves, the Dalí Theater-Museum was the third most visited museum in Spain in 2017, with 1,207,149 visitors, ranking number 40 in its ranking of the 100 museums in most visited art in the world. Due to its large influx of public and its commercial management, it is possibly the only Spanish museum that is entirely self-financing with its own income.
It is managed by the Gala-Salvador Dalí Foundation. In his will, the artist bequeathed an enormous amount of works of art to the Spanish State, which were divided between this museum and the Reina Sofía Museum in Madrid. The repertoire exhibited in Figueras has subsequently been enriched with acquisitions made by the Foundation.
The Dalí Museum building is a monument of the municipality of Figueras included in the inventory of the Architectural Heritage of Catalonia. The space currently occupied by the Dalí Theatre-Museum was, for many years, the old Municipal Theater of Figueras or Principal Theater of Figueras, built between 1848 and 1850 by the Catalan architect Josep Roca i Bros. It was a neoclassical building financed by the classes of the city, within the framework of the strategy of public legitimization carried out by the nineteenth-century bourgeoisie, mainly through the remodeling of cultural and artistic institutions.
