Memorial is at the intersection of North Main Cross Street and East Main Street in front of the Lawrence County Courthouse. The memorial is a granite bench without a DAR insignia.

The principle of "land for military service" was used to pay soldiers of the Revolutionary War. Each colony determined the acreage per rank, requisite duration of service and location of its respective military district. The Military District for Virginia was located in southwestern Kentucky and southcentral Ohio.

James Blevins PVT. Continental Line.

Edward Burgess PVT. in the 14th VA. Regiment.

Jeremiah Burns enlisted June 1776, served three years and was discharged soon after the Battle of York. Among other battles and skirmishes, Mr. Burns fought in the Battles of Germantown, Monmouth and at the siege of Yorktown. The foregoing facts are embodied in the war records of Mr. Burns and kept in the Department of the Interior at Washington.

Moses Preston enlisted in 1779 under Major Hill's Company in Colonel Abraham Buford's Regiment in Halifax County, Virginia. He participated in the battles of Milford, Camden, and Ninety-Six. He served a total of 18 months. He also served under Captain Bowyer in Colonel Campbell's regiment as well as serving under George Washington.
