is the 331st Tomcat to roll off the assembly line here at Calverton. Grumman produce a total of 712 F-14s between 1970 and 1992. The last F-14 Tomcat was retired on October 4,2006.
During its long and distinguished career this aircraft served with pride with Fighter Squadrons VF-14, VF-32, VF-41 and VF-84. Today this Tomcat is shown as it was in its final assignment with VF-101 Grim Reapers based at NAS Oceana, Virginia.
The F-14 was crewed by a Pilot in front seat , while a Radar Intercept Officer, or RIO,whose responsibilities included operating the radar,TARTS(camera) Pod, weapons and communications systems occupied the rear seat.
This F-14 was powered by two Pratt & Whitney TF30-P-414A turbofan engines each producing a thrust of 20,900 lbs; with afterburners, giving the Tomcat a top speed of over Mach 2. Total internal fuel carried was 2, 385 gallons with two additional external fuel tanks each carrying 267 gallons. In-flight refueling capability enhanced the jets performance.
Armament for this F-14 consisted of one internal M61A1 20mm Vulcan cannon with any combination of AIM-54 Phoenix, AIM-7 Sparrow and AIM-9 Sidewinder missiles for air-to-air combat. Later F-14 were also capable of carrying air to ground ordnance.
Overall length of the Tomcat is 62'-8.5". Wingspan with wings in forward position at 20 degrees is 64'-1.5", and 38'-2.5" with the wings swept aft at 68 degrees.
