LA CHAPELLE DES PÉNITENTS

Credits

THE CHAPEL OF THE PENITENTS

At the beginning of 1600, the Brotherhood of White Penitents was established in Marcillac. The chapel dates from 1666 and has the particularity of having been attached to the "lantern of the dead" which serves as a bell tower and which was pulled down during the Revolution. This lantern of the dead, built following the plague epidemics, was located in the old cemetery. It lit up as soon as a death was reported and was only extinguished when the deceased was buried. Today this chapel is the starting point of the Saint-Bourrou procession.
