This flora and fauna information sign is located along the TransCanada Trail at a plank suspension bridge that's actually more sturdy than it seems.

A Farmer's Friend
Flying swiftly, silently, and close to the ground, the Ferruginous Hawk can be hard to see -- especially for unsuspecting ground squirrels. Varying its hunting strategies, the hawk may swoop from a perch to capture prey, hover then dive, or even crouch at the entrance of the burrow grabbing the squirrel as it emerges. A family of hawks with two to four young may consume 500 of these rodents during the nesting season.
One of the largest hawks, the ferruginous uses the grasslands as its primary habitat. Sometimes mating for life (up to 20 years) the hawk usually returns to the same nesting area each spring and often uses the same nest: a big, bulky affair, lined with cow dung.
Loss of habitat has placed the hawk on the endangered list in many areas, but researchers are optimistic of the birds recovery as it increasingly uses artificial nest sites and uncultivated grasslands.
