Street level and the top of the outcropping of Manhattan schist here are nearly 30' apart, but the parks authority felt the need to place a fence here to separate the park and the street. In the intervening decades several trees have taken root in the slim few inches between the fence and rockface, or in the rock itself. The marked tree is not just having a snack near the roots, but at the top of the 7' fence as well, absorbing several of the spikes along the top.
Type of Tree: American Beech
