From October 25 through November 3, 1985, the international philatelic community descended on Rome for a major stamp exhibition called Italia ’85. As a promotion of this event, Italy issued two postage stamps in 1984 featuring old versus new motifs, or more aptly, ancient and modern. One of these showed a section of the old Appian Way intimating that all roads lead to Rome. (Of course, the Appian Way was also used by the cursus publicus, a postal system of sorts used in ancient Rome.)

Contrasting with the ancient is the modern building housing Italy’s postal system. At the time this stamp was issued, that was known as the Ministry of Posts and Telegraphs. Today, Italy’s postal system has been reorganized and goes by the name Poste Italiane, but is still headquartered in this building, located in the EUR section of Rome, south of the city’s center.
