In the years following World War I, there was a small but significant number of emigrants from San Marino to the United States. Called Sammarinese Americans, they settled primarily in New York City and Detroit. In 1938, the San Marino Social Club was established to “promote camaraderie and brotherhood among the area’s new immigrants.” Originally located in Detroit, they moved to their new facility in the suburb of Troy in 1976. Today, the venue is used primarily for weddings, banquets corporate gatherings and other social events.

In 2001, the Republic of San Marino honored its diaspora with a set of two postage stamps. One showed Ellis Island in New York City and other showed this building outside of Detroit.
