The contrast between old and new is quite evident when this 1892 office building is photographed against the backdrop of modern skyscrapers in downtown Toronto. The iconic scene has become somewhat symbolic of the city of Toronto, so much so that Canada Post chose it to represent all of Ontario on this 1992 postage stamp issued for Canada Day.

The Gooderham building was originally the home of the Gooderham and Worts distillery, once the largest distillery in Canada. They moved out in 1952 and the building managed to escape the wrecking ball long enough to be declared an Ontario Heritage property in 1975.

Today, the Gooderham building is still used as an office building but is also well known for the trompe-l'œil mural on its rear. Painted by noted Canadian artist Derek Michael Besant, the mural makes it look as though that side of the building is peeling off.
