Musical composers often try to create a visual image with sound. In this painting, Arthur Dove attempts to create sound with a visual image. While gazing at this painting, it’s easy to imagine hearing the haunting sound of a foghorn. Art critics may disagree as to whether Arthur Dove was a true abstract artist or not, but his influence on future abstract expressionists is universally acknowledged.

In 2013, the U.S. Postal Service celebrated the 100th anniversary of the 1913 Armory Show in New York City, which introduced ‘modern’ art into America, with the release of a special set of postage stamps. The sheet reproduced a dozen works of art by different artists. Making the cut was ‘Fog Horns’ by Arthur Dove. Dove created the painting in 1929 while living on a houseboat on Long Island sound.
