The striking sculpture of a grieving woman in a flowing robe collapsed on the steps of the grave site of Rose Merello Guarion is a haunting and beautiful memorial. The sculpture is made of bronze with a great level of detail.

In Green-Wood Cemetery there is a sculpture of a beautiful woman reclining across stone steps. Open-eyed with lips parted and long hair flowing, she is dressed in a long gown, and wearing sandals. She is clutching a bouquet of ferns and flowers in her hand. (is a symbol of the resurrection and life cut off in its flourish). The sculptor of this gorgeous sculpture is unknown.
For generations, Brooklyn locals have believed that the monument commemorates a mafia bride gunned down on her wedding day in a revenge killing. The true story behind the statue is just as tragic.
In the summer of 1909 Dominica Merello and her daughter,Rose Guarino, were dining on the lawn of their NJ summer home when Pietro Silverto, an irate domestic employee, rushes the women to exact revenge. Rose was shot trying to protect a servant girl, Annis Tarello, whom Pietro also shot. He had been dismissed earlier in the day due to complaints by Annie.
Guarino's body was held for two years in the cemetery receiving vault while being built. After years of being exposed to the elements, the bronze sculpture has taken on a green patina, which makes it more striking. The weather also has caused the vertical lines on the face, resembling tears running down her cheeks.
