In the "Parcul Valea Morilor" (Valley of the Mills Park) is a memorial stone
with the following inscription:
Trecătorule,
pleacă-ţi fruntea întru
cinstirea memoriei basarabenilor
masacraţi aici de călăii
bolşevici în iunie 1940 - iulie 1941
This translates to: "Passerby, bow your head in honor of the memory
of the Basarabians massacred here by the Bolshevik executioners in June 1940
- July 1941". Unfortunately, there is no information to be found, when
and who exactly errected this memorial stone. But the massacre is
documented:
"Executed in the
NKVD
(interior ministry of the Soviet Union) headquarters in
Chisinau
In Chisinau, two places were discovered where Moldovans were shot: the
'basic' one is on the current Grenoble street, and another - the NKVD
building, the former headquarters of the Italian Consulate. [...]
Regarding the second place of mass murders in Chisinau - the headquarters
of the NKVD, the Chisinau Police Headquarters, the Security Bureau, informed
the Governor of Bessarabia on August 31, 1941: 'Making information and
research to establish the burial place of the political victims of of the
Red Terror, I was able to establish the following on August 30, 1941: in the
premises of the former Italian Consulate on Viilor street, currently
completely burned, in the back part of the courtyard, near a beer hall, in
an empty place camouflaged with high boards partially burned, two large,
fresh pits are found, in which several people shot during the withdrawal of
the Red troops from Chisinau are buried'. By the evening of September 6,
1941, 85 bodies were exhumed at the NKVD headquarters, in total over 100
were unearthed.
The last documented acts of execution in Chisinau from the period
1940-1941 date from June 27, 1941. Although the fighting in the Prut lasted
for a week, retreating, on that day, the NKVD-ists shot over 50 people,
having also time to write execution documents."
