In 1958, Italy issued two stamps commemorating the Lourdes apparitions of 1858. Both stamps have the same design which shows the Basilica of Lourdes in France (in the background) and the statue of Mary from the Immaculate Conception monument in Rome. The monument, which was dedicated in 1857, was built to commemorate the recently adopted dogma of the Immaculate Conception, issued via Papal bull in 1854 by Pope Pius IX.

The monument consists of a bronze statue of the Virgin Mary perched atop a marble column. The column itself dates to ancient Rome and was found during some excavations for a nearby monastery in 1777. At the base of the monument are statues of Moses, David, Isaiah and Ezekiel. This monument also represents artwork by committee as all five major statues were carved by five different sculptors. The bronze statue of Mary is the work of Giuseppe Obici.
