"The San Torcuato gate is one of the old gates of the Guadix wall that gave access to one of the suburbs from the northern part, an area that was formerly commercial in nature. Currently the gate is located between the alley of San Torcuato and the entrance to the Pedro Antonio de Alarcón park.
The gate was built in Muslim times and was originally known as Bib-Bazamarín or "second gate of Baza". In the 16th century it was renovated in its external appearance and began to assume functions of a more political and religious nature.
In 1593 a chapel was built at the top, on the occasion of the passage through it, which would house the relics of the holy evangelizer San Torcuato.
From that moment on, it acquired a new appearance and public mass was celebrated from its balcony on the designated days. As a result of these interventions, from that same year onwards it also became known as the "gate of Saint Torquatus." (He is a holy martyr venerated by the Orthodox and Catholic churches.)

During the 18th and 19th centuries, various interventions were carried out for restoration purposes.
