Though an independent nation (and one which remained neutral in both World Wars), there were citizens of San Marino who volunteered their service during the struggle for Italian Unification in the nineteenth century and in World War I. This monument was commissioned by the Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs and designed by city engineer Gino Zani to honor those volunteers. It was inaugurated in 1927 complete with the issuance of a set of three postage stamps to commemorate the event.

The large monument consists of a pair of stairways that lead to a votive chapel and obelisk at the top. There is a plaque with the names of 138 San Marino volunteers who participated in the Unification of Italy and in the First World War. Two more names were added after the Second World War to bring the total to 140.
