Deze plaggenhut is een replica van een plaggenhut uit 1918 in Onstwedde in de provincie Groningen. Het interieur is uit 1900.
Op het bordje bij de hut staat het volgende te lezen:
Het is bijna niet voor te stellen, maar zo wonen de allerarmsten aan het begin van de 20ste eeuw.
Het is eigenlijk niet veel meer dan een flinke kuil met een dak er op.
De wanden zijn gemaakt van gestapelde heide plaggen en het dak is gemaakt van dennenstammen en latten met plaggen.
Mensen zonder vast werk, dagloners en slecht betaalde veenarbeiders kunnen zich niet beter permitteren.
Als er helemaal geen werk is moet het hele gezin aan de slag, bezems van hei maken of stenen tot steenslag kloppen voor de verharding van wegen.
Er is een moestuintje en een enkeling heeft een geit. De hutten raken snel in verval en moeten regelmatig opgelapt worden.
Kortom de omstandigheden zijn slecht en er wordt regelmatig naar de fles gegrepen om de omstandigheden te verzachten.

It is almost impossible to imagine, but this is how the poorest people lived at the beginning of the 20th century.
It's actually not much more than a large hole with a roof on it.
The walls are made of stacked heather sods and the roof is made of pine trunks and slats with sods.
People without permanent work, day laborers and poorly paid peat workers cannot afford better.
If there is no work at all, the whole family has to work, making brooms from heather or beating stones into crushed stone for paving roads.
There is a vegetable garden and some have a goat. The huts quickly fall into disrepair and need to be patched up regularly.
In short, the conditions are bad and people regularly turn to the bottle to alleviate the circumstances.
