"Hotel De Wereld is een hotel in de Nederlandse stad Wageningen, in de provincie Gelderland. In 1945 gaf de Canadese geallieerde generaal Charles Foulkes op zaterdag 5 mei, de dag die sedertdien Bevrijdingsdag heet, in dit hotel aan de Duitse bezetter de bevelen voor de aftocht van de Duitse strijdkrachten uit Nederland, na de overgave van de Duitsers. De overgave van de Duitse strijdkrachten had op 4 mei 1945 plaatsgevonden op de Lüneburger Heide in Duitsland door Admiraal Von Friedeburg ten overstaande van Veldmaarschalk Montgomery. De capitulatie ging 5 mei 1945 om 08:00 in.
De Waerelt wordt voor het eerst in de 17e eeuw vermeld. Het was een logement aan de oude route van Utrecht naar Arnhem, net buiten de ommuurde stad. In 1852 werd het oude pand vervangen door een nieuw, tweelaags gebouw met kap, waaraan aan het einde van die eeuw nog een drielaagse dwarsvleugel werd toegevoegd.
Capitulatiebesprekingen
Op 5 mei 1945 kiest Luitenant-Generaal Charles Foulkes namens de geallieerden Hotel De Wereld voor de besprekingen met de Duitse Kolonel-Generaal Johannes Blaskowitz over de overgave van de Duitse bezetter in Nederland. Foulkes zou voor deze plaats hebben gekozen wegens de ligging van Wageningen aan het toenmalige front, de afwezigheid van burgers vanwege de evacuatie van de plaats en de symboliek van de naam "De Wereld". Prins Bernhard is bij de besprekingen aanwezig.
Op 9 juli 1945 onthult prins Bernhard in aanwezigheid van Luitenant-Generaal Foulkes een herdenkingsplaat op de gevel van ‘De Wereld'.
Na de oorlog
Na de Tweede Wereldoorlog raakt De Wereld als horecagelegenheid in verval. Verschillende huurders kunnen niet meer de grandeur van weleer bereiken. Na enkele decennia wordt voor het gebouw zelfs een sloopvergunning afgegeven. Zover komt het echter niet. Tot 1962 is er een capitulatiemuseum in gevestigd met onder andere de tafels en stoelen die in gebruik waren bij de capitulatiebesprekingen. De Landbouwuniversiteit koopt het pand en gebruikt het voor onder meer studentendecaan, studentenarts, Studium Generale, Werkgroep Vormingswerk en Theater 't Hemeltje.
In 1994 wordt de Stichting Nationaal Erfgoed Hotel De Wereld opgericht, en vestigt in het hotel een Educatief Centrum en de Leerstoel Rampenstudies. De stichting zet zich in voor het behoud van het pand en zijn geschiedenis. Onder meer prof. dr. Hans Blom, voormalig directeur van het NIOD, is lid van het Comité van aanbeveling van deze stichting. In 2013 verwerft de Stichting het hotel met een hypothecaire lening van het vfonds. Eén van de voorwaarden van het vfonds is een fusie tussen het NCHC Wageningen 1945 en Wageningse Comité 4 en 5 mei en dat de inhoudelijke activiteiten van de Stichting Nationaal Erfgoed door het nieuwe comité (Wageningen45) worden overgenomen.
Restauratie en ontwikkeling
In 2004 is de restauratie van Hotel De Wereld voltooid. Het gebouw is weer ingericht als hotel. De universiteitsvoorzieningen zijn er uit en horeca-uitbater Addie Roelofsen betrekt het pand. Onder leiding van chef Roelofsen krijgt het restaurant O Mundo eind 2009 een Michelinster. In november 2017 wordt de exploitant van hotel en restaurant, de Jaap Venendaal Groep (7Habits BV), failliet verklaard. O Mundo is de Michelinster dan al enige tijd kwijt. Binnen zes dagen na het faillissement nemen hoteliers Lammert en Sjoukje de Vries van Hotel Restaurant Landgoed Groot Warnsborn in Arnhem de exploitatie van Hotel De Wereld over, maar in 2020 trekken zij zich terug. Sinds 1 oktober 2020 is de HIM plus groep de uitbater van Hotel De Wereld. Het pand is behalve als hotel ook als LEV.@De Wereld foodbar in gebruik.
Het gebouw is rijksmonument.
In december 2019 besluit Wageningen University & Research, die al enige tijd de naastgelegen Aula, de voormalige bibliotheek erachter en het Irenebrigadeplein wil verkopen aan een consortium van BOEi en Van Swaay Projectontwikkeling. Het Wageningse Heerenstraat Theater wil een eigentijds 'screen theatre' in de Aula vestigen. In samenwerking met BOEi en Van Swaay ontwikkelen Hotel De Wereld, Heerenstraat Theater en Wageningen 45 plannen voor wat het 'Vrijheidskwartier' heet."

The surrender of the German forces took place on May 4, 1945 on the Lüneburg Heath in Germany by Admiral Von Friedeburg in the presence of Field Marshal Montgomery. The Waerelt is first mentioned in the 17th century. It was a lodging house on the old route from Utrecht to Arnhem, just outside the walled city. In 1852, the old building was replaced by a new, two-storey building with a roof, to which a three-storey transverse wing was added at the end of that century.
Capitulation talks
On May 5, 1945, Lieutenant General Charles Foulkes, on behalf of the Allies, chooses Hotel De Wereld for discussions with German Colonel General Johannes Blaskowitz about the surrender of the German occupier in the Netherlands. Foulkes is said to have chosen this place because of the location of Wageningen at the then front, the absence of civilians due to the evacuation of the place and the symbolism of the name "De Wereld". Prince Bernhard is present at the discussions.
On July 9, 1945, Prince Bernhard unveiled a commemorative plaque on the facade of 'De Wereld' in the presence of Lieutenant General Foulkes.
After the war
After the Second World War, De Wereld fell into decline as a catering establishment. Several tenants can no longer achieve the grandeur of yesteryear. After a few decades, a demolition permit was even issued for the building. However, it does not come to that. Until 1962, it housed a capitulation museum with, among other things, the tables and chairs that were used during the capitulation discussions. The Agricultural University buys the building and uses it for, among other things, a student dean, student doctor, Studium Generale, Werkgroep Vormingswerk and Theater 't Hemeltje.
In 1994, the National Heritage Hotel De Wereld Foundation was founded, and established an Educational Center and the Disaster Studies Chair in the hotel. The foundation is committed to preserving the building and its history. Prof. Dr. Hans Blom, former director of the NIOD, is a member of the recommendation committee of this foundation. In 2013, the Foundation acquired the hotel with a mortgage loan from the vfonds. One of the conditions of the vfonds is a merger between the NCHC Wageningen 1945 and Wageningen Committee 4 and 5 May and that the substantive activities of the National Heritage Foundation are taken over by the new committee (Wageningen45).
Restoration and development
The restoration of Hotel De Wereld was completed in 2004. The building has been converted into a hotel again. The university facilities have been completed and catering manager Addie Roelofsen is moving into the building. Under the leadership of chef Roelofsen, the O Mundo restaurant received a Michelin star at the end of 2009. In November 2017, the hotel and restaurant operator, the Jaap Venendaal Group (7Habits BV), was declared bankrupt. O Mundo has lost its Michelin star for some time now. Within six days of the bankruptcy, hoteliers Lammert and Sjoukje de Vries from Hotel Restaurant Landgoed Groot Warnsborn in Arnhem take over the operation of Hotel De Wereld, but they withdraw in 2020. The HIM plus group has been the operator of Hotel De Wereld since October 1, 2020. In addition to being a hotel, the building is also used as a LEV.@De Wereld food bar.
The building is a national monument.
In December 2019, Wageningen University & Research, which has been wanting to sell the adjacent Aula, the former library behind it and the Irenebrigadeplein for some time, to a consortium of BOEi and Van Swaay Projectontwikkeling. The Wageningen Heerenstraat Theater wants to establish a contemporary 'screen theatre' in the Aula. In collaboration with BOEi and Van Swaay, Hotel De Wereld, Heerenstraat Theater and Wageningen 45 are developing plans for what is called the 'Freedom Quarter'."
