"La Catedral de Faro, también conocida como la Iglesia de Santa María, es un edificio ubicado en la ciudad de Faro. Fue construido después de la reconquista cristiana en 1251 por el arzobispo de Braga D. Joao Viegas. Posteriormente fue entregada a la Orden de Santiago.
En el 1577 se volvió sede de la Diócesis Episcopal del Algarve, unos años más tarde (1596) fue saqueada y quemada por las tropas británicas del conde de Essex. Reconstruida después del terremoto de 1722 y 1755 y aun así se realizaron otras obras. (El campanario inacabado señala la vida atribulada de este edificio.)
Se destaca, en el interior, los conjuntos de talla en madera y el órgano, en el exterior hay que señalar las excelentes vistas sobre la ciudad y la ría, que es posible tener en la parte superior de la torre del campanario."

"The Cathedral of Faro, also known as the Church of Santa María, is a building located in the city of Faro. It was built after the Christian reconquest in 1251 by the archbishop of Braga D. Joao Viegas. It was later handed over to the Order from Santiago.
In 1577 it became the seat of the Episcopal Diocese of the Algarve, a few years later (1596) it was looted and burned by the British troops of the Earl of Essex. Rebuilt after the earthquake of 1722 and 1755 and even so other works were carried out. (The unfinished bell tower marks the troubled life of this building.)
Inside, the wood carving sets and the organ stand out, while outside we must point out the excellent views over the city and the estuary, which can be had at the top of the bell tower."
