The search for Nicolaus Copernicus' birthplace began in 1711.

This is not easy to determine, because Nicolaus Copernicus came from a wealthy merchant family that at that time owned many properties in the city of Torun.

In 1881, the mayor of Torun, Georg Bender, found a notebook containing a list of townspeople's obligations from 1450. Based on this document, Bender determined that Nicolaus Copernicus (the astronomer's father) lived in a house on St. Anna Street (currently 17 Mikolaja Kopernika).

According to the findings of historian Tomasz Jasinski from 1985, Copernicus's home turned out to be the neighboring tenement house at 15 Kopernika Street.

Currently, two connected tenement houses at 15 and 17 Mikolaja Kopernika Street house the Nicolaus Copernicus House, a branch of the District Museum in Torun. The museum was opened in 1973.
