[FR]

"Jean Nicolas François Ponsart was a Walloon draftsman and lithographer. His romantic views, published in books and portfolios, show vedutes from the Prussian Rhine province, particularly the 19th-century Ahr valley, which he was one of the first artists of the Düsseldorf school to represent.

Despite a certain business sense, which was evident from the start of his career in the invitation to subscribe to his lithographic works, Ponsart did not become rich throughout his life. He began his academic career as an art teacher at the Malmedy high school between 1842 and 1866. From time to time, he is said to have worked as an architect in addition to painting in Malmedy. In 1858, the Belgian Society of Watercolorists made him an honorary member.

In the garden adjoining the old presbytery, at the foot of the Saint-Pierre-Saint-Paul-et-Saint-Quirin Cathedral church, a memorial stands out on a rock: it is decorated with the medallion of the landscaper Jean Nicolas Ponsart, friend of Madou."
