The Garland Downtown Historic District was placed on the National Register of Historic Places on April 10, 2017, with an update issued on July 24, 2017, to include the historic Alston House. At present, the best ways to obtain a copy of the Registration Form are either through the National Register or the Texas Historical Commission. In the latter case, follow the "Optional link" below, where the Registration Form will ultimately be located, and report an error to request a copy. In the interim, one can obtain a copy from me
here.
The Registration Form notes this one as "a two-part commercial block building constructed in 1911 in the Romanesque Revival style. While the brick walls remain, the parapet is simple, the windows have been covered with sun screens to hide a third floor that was added on the interior in 1952, and the storefront has changed." There is some overlapping and complementary information in the description given later in the document:
Two-part commercial block brick building with three bays of windows above and a storefront divided by brick columns. The brick is painted below the second floor and stucco covers the location of the original transom windows. The original wood windows are covered by sunscreens. In 1950 the façade was altered and an addition was made to the rear and in 1953 the building was renovated to create a third level within the two-story building defining its current appearance.
