Besides being the 32nd President of the United States, Franklin D. Roosevelt was an avid stamp collector. During his 12+ years in office, he frequently weighed in on the various postage stamps being issued by the Post Office Dept. One of these issues was a new set of definitives known as the Presidential series released in 1938. These stamps featured all of the presidents from George Washington to Calvin Coolidge and, except for the highest values, had denominations that matched each president’s ordinal position (i.e. 1st President George Washington was on the 1c stamp, 2nd President John Adams was on the 2c stamp and so forth). But some fractional values were also needed, so to round out the set, Benjamin Franklin, Martha Washington and a picture of the White House were put on the ½c, 1½c and 4½c stamps respectively.

The design of each of these stamps was similar, namely a right-facing portrait bust of the subject on one side, UNITED STATES POSTAGE on the other and the denomination below. The artwork used for most of these was either an existing portrait bust, a medal or a statue. For the 1½c Martha Washington stamp, this marble bust by not-so-well-known artist Lola Sleeth Miller was used. It’s Miller’s best-known work due in part to its appearance on this stamp.

The bust is displayed at the Daughters of the American Revolution Museum which is attached to Constitution Hall in Washington DC. Constitution Hall, Memorial Continental Hall and this museum form one large complex which is owned by the DAR, an organization to which Lola Sleeth Miller belonged.
