Odon, son successeur, y séjourne quelques temps afin d'y rétablir la règle clunisienne. Elle devient alors un important établissement de réforme monastique qui, avec Déols, se trouve aux origines de la réforme clunisienne dans le Berry. Après la mort d'Odon en 942, ses liens avec Cluny se distendent.

Au cours des siècles, les bâtiments monastiques subissent pillages, in- cendies, destructions et reconstruc- tions. L'abbatiale, devenue l'église paroissiale Saint-Paxent que nous connaissons aujourd'hui, a été re- bâtie entièrement à la fin du XIV siècle. Bertrand de Chamborant lui adjoint en 1493 le clocher-porche, haut de 42 mètres.

Parce qu'elle est délabrée et laissée à l'abandon, un arrêté du parlement prononce son extinction en 1735.

De son histoire mouvementée, Massay conserve l'église abbatiale, la chapelle Saint-Loup, la salle capitulaire, le dortoir des moines, le logis du chambrier et une tour de garde, témoin des anciennes fortifications."
