Park your car along North Evans Road just South of the intersection with Lookout Road. Walk back along the sidewalk to the area of the Gaging Station. It is NOT the square of four yellow pillars that you can see close to the intersection. The Gaging Station reference mark (the benchmark you are wanting to find here) is literally on the edge of the mouth of the drainage ditch visible from this small park-like area. Walk toward the depression that is probably surrounded by tall weeds and woody shrubs. Look for the top of the old stream flow measuring tank! Take a portable GPS unit to help locate the concrete slab where the Gaging Station reference mark is monumented.
The rectangular slab of concrete where the Gaging Station marker is found is literally at the edge of the drainage ditch that feeds into Cibolo Creek. The tall vegetation (cactus and prickery shrubs) can be very thorny, so be careful what you grab onto or move aside as you walk to the marker. The soil near the edge of the creek is full of round pebbles and breaks away easily, so be careful not to fall or slide down the hillside by mistake! A walking staff would be wise to have to push aside the thorny plants.
The Gaging Station reference mark has three rings of text stamped into the disk.
(The First/outer-most ring of test reads as follows:
U. S. GEOLOGICAL SURVEY

(The second/middle row of text reads:)
