"The Plaza de Alfons el Magnànim , also known as El Parterre is a square in the city of Valencia located on the boundary between the neighborhoods of Sant Francesc and La Xerea , in the district of Ciutat Vella . To the north it is bordered by the Glorieta gardens and Pau street ; to the south, it is bordered by Pintor Sorrolla street.

History
The Parterre garden was built in 1850 on some plots of the old Plaza de la Aduana, a place considered by Martínez Aloy as the lowest in the city. At that time 47 magnolias and 2 araucarias were planted, trees from the garden of the Archbishop's Palace of Valencia. It was not until the placement of the Statue of King James the Conqueror in the middle of the square that its organization was defined, in 1891.

Formerly it had four circular ponds, one at each end of the garden, of which only one has been preserved, the northern part and is dedicated to the Roman god Neptune, which is sculpted by Ponsonelli. The great flood of 1957 damaged the garden, destroying the three fountains and ponds, as well as a large part of the botanical species of the garden. Among the trees that survived the flood was a gigantic ficus.

In 1901 a stone bench with a wrought iron backing was built around the garden.

Form
A statue of Jaume the Conqueror, sculpted by Agapit Vallmitjana, stands in the middle of the square. Surrounded on three sides by automobile tracks and on the fourth by a semi-transitable walkway, the square forms an islet in the middle that is situated on a slight slope and to access, you have to go down a few steps. It is fenced and the ground is covered with sand, with four small landscaped areas. At the northern point, there is a gas station and a tobacconist attached and some trees in the middle.

Buildings in the square

The authorities celebrate the Diada del País Valencià in the Parterre in 2008, with the Senyera Real.
Among the buildings overlooking the square are one of the city's three Corte Inglés, the regional tourist information office, and the Palace of Justice. Located within walking distance is the headquarters of the University of Valencia in Ciutat Vella.

Festive role
It is the traditional end point of the civic procession that carries the Senyera from City Hall on the Nou d'Octubre ."
