Cuando el 16 de noviembre del año 1700 Luis XIV logró que su sobrino Felipe fuera proclamado (nada menos que en Versalles) rey de España, debió de sentirse exultante. De hecho, el emblema del futuro Felipe V fue diseñado por heraldistas franceses, parece que bajo su directa supervisión. Como señala Menéndez Pidal de Navascués «No hay duda de que para el Rey Sol tendría un enorme valor político esta imposición de las lises en el corazón de las armas de la monarquía más grande del mundo».1 El simbolismo es muy claro: muestra al linaje, encima de los territorios sobre los que reina. Hay además otro matiz. Al escusón de los Borbones españoles se le asigna una brisura: concretamente la bordura de gules (roja), en referencia a que se trata de una rama secundaria. Las armas puras correspondían a Luis XIV. Así –en ese mismo momento en el que fue adoptado el blasón– se establece una dependencia simbólica del rey de España respecto al monarca francés, que era el jefe de la familia Borbón y quien, como hemos podido ver, actuó en este caso en calidad de tal."
