Antônio de Castro Alves (born 1847, Muritiba, Braz.—died 1871, Salvador) was a Romantic poet whose sympathy for the Brazilian abolitionist cause won him the name “poet of the slaves.”

Work of the Italian sculptor Pasquale de Chirico, the statue of Castro Alves was raised to the top of the column that serves as its base in 1923.

On the base of the statue is a bronze group, measuring 2.16 meters, depicting an angel in a flying position, lifting the enslaved woman by the arm, raising her to freedom. The woman is barefoot and half-naked and looks scared.
