The Basilica of St. Paul Outside the Walls is one of the four major papal basilicas in Rome. It is so named because it stands just outside the old Aurelian walls of the city. A church on this site (the traditional burial site of Paul of Tarsus) was first founded by Emperor Constantine I and consecrated in 324 AD. It has been a work in progress for hundreds of years and, at one time, was the largest church in Rome.

A fire destroyed St. Paul’s in 1823 leaving little of the ancient structure. Oddly enough, one of the few elements that was relatively unharmed by the fire was the gothic ciborium (sometimes called a baldachin) which stood over the altar. It is dated 1285 and is the work of 13th-century Italian sculptor and architect Arnolfo di Cambio. The elaborately carved canopy contains four statues and colorful mosaics and is supported by four porphyry columns. It stands directly over the sarcophagus of Paul the Apostle.

The stamp was one of a set of five issued in 1967 by the Vatican to commemorate the 19th centennial of the martyrdom of St. Peter and St. Paul.
