The Carmen Town Hall is on the south side of Main Street, and houses the city offices and town clerk. They were "Open" on the day of my visit, but the clerk was out running errands and I was not able to talk to anyone there.
Like so many small towns in this part of Oklahoma, Carmen was a stop along the railroad. On May 23, 1903, a tornado destroyed the fledgling town of wood-frame buildings, killed three people and injured 150. However, the town quickly recovered and the population rose to nearly a thousand. By the mid-1930s the community supported a flour mill, six churches, a fourth grain elevator, three hotels, six groceries, a movie theater, a creamery, an ice plant, and three dozen other retail establishments. However, the multiple railroads that were the foundation of Carmen's success slowly faded away and by 1960 only one remained. The population steadily declined, Carmen's Post Office closed, and the schools were consolidated with the rest of the district. Today the population is about four hundred.
