"En el programa de festejos de hace cincuenta años aparecía por primera vez el escudo heráldico de nuestro pueblo.
Hasta entonces se usaba como emblema representativo de la villa el escudo nacional.
El proyecto se había encargado en los primeros meses de 1958 al profesor de Filosofía y Letras de la Universidad de Murcia, Don Antonio de Hoyos Ruiz, a la sazón bibliotecario y archivero de la Excelentísima Diputación Provincial, colaborador en años anteriores de otras ediciones del programa de fiestas. El planteamiento proyectado quedaba descrito en un dibujo del conocido pintor Don José María Almela (Espinardo 1900-Murcia 1989), que se había presentado en la edición del año anterior del mismo programa de festejos. Con la adopción por parte del Ayuntamiento del proyecto de Don Antonio de Hoyos, se había descartado otra opción de escudo cuyos blasones estaban formados por la cruz de la Orden de Santiago, dos torres y un puente, rodeaos por la leyenda: “unos pasaron otros quedaron”.

Con fecha 14 de abril de 1958 el Ayuntamiento de Abarán aprobada por una unanimidad presentar al Ministerio de la Gobernación la memoria heráldica de Don Antonio de Hoyos para adoptar el escudo representativo de la población. Siguiendo el procedimiento legal, el citado ministerio daba su conformidad con fecha 31 de Diciembre del mismo año y daba traslado del expediente a la Real Academia de la Historia para su aprobación definitiva".
