This milestone is on national cycle route 66, which is 136 miles long and connects Manchester to Hull. At this point the trail also follows the route of the Wilberforce Way, a walking route that a 60 mile linear trail devised to mark the bicentenary of the 1807 Act of Parliament abolishing British involvement in the Transatlantic Slave Trade. It connects Hull to York.

At this point this joint route is passing along the edge of Walmgate Stray an area of open land that has been dedicated as an area of common land held in trust in perpetuity for local people.

The signpost is half way between the Millennium bridge over the river Ouse and York University.

SUSTRANS is an organisation that promotes the use of cycles as a green form of transport. A national network of cycle routes is being developed in conjunction with local councils. Wherever possible the routes avoid roads, but in some places have to share the road network.

As part of the millennium celebrations 1000 mileposts have been installed at various positions throughout the whole SUSTRANS network.

Sustrans commissioned four artists from the four countries of the United Kingdom to design cast iron ‘Millennium Mileposts’, but each design was spread throughout the network rather than being only installed in the country of birth of the artist.

This Scottish style was designed by Iain McColl and entitled The Cockerill, influenced by Miro's 'The Fork' and Branusci's 'The Cock'.

Many of these milestones are plain black in colour but SUSTRANS encourages local communities to paint the milestones in their own colour schemes and this one has been painted in multiple colours and has been maintained well since the Millennium.
