Le château fut construit vers 1240/1250 par l'évêque de Metz, Jacques de Lorraine. Déployé sur près de 4 hectares, l'ensemble castral couvrait toute la superficie du plateau, depuis cet endroit jusqu'à la chapelle Ste-Catherine.
*Le château était la résidence des officiers de l'évêque et du comte de Sarrebruck et à partir du XVle siècle, celle des baillis-gouverneurs des ducs de Lorraine. On y rendait la justice et les prisons de la seigneurie s'y trouvaient.
A gauche, le soubassement de la grosse tour, de plus de 16 m de diamètre et d'une épaisseur de 6 m, ite Jur des prêtres puis, au XVIle siècle, tour des sorcières. L'endroit abritáit le fond-de-fosse, le cachot le plus dur. Après avoir été doté de bastions vers 1625, le château fut démantelé par Richelieu en 1634.
