The M60 Main Battle Tank was developed by the U.S. at the height of the Cold War in the late 1950s as a response to the perceived superiority of Soviet armored weapon systems. Famously described as “improperly tested and mildly flawed,” the M60 has withstood the test of time, and thousands are still in active military use all over the world. The M60 first saw significant war time action in the 1973 Yom Kippur War in Israel. The most significant war time deployment of the M60 by the U.S. military was during the Persian Gulf War.

In the U.S., the M60 was largely replaced by the M1 Abrams tank in the early 1990s as was this example which was donated to the city of Clay Center by the Kansas Army National Guard in 1991. The tank is displayed in Dexter Park along with a sign that lists the general characteristics of the M60 and although it lacks details as to the exact model, it does intimate that the tank was manufactured in 1963. It is one of many M60 tanks displayed in communities all across the nation.
