"El Santuario de La Plata es el único construido por un Obispo. Corría el año 1959. Por ese entonces, Florencio Varela pertenecía a la Arquidiócesis de La Plata y Monseñor Antonio Plaza decide visitar Nuevo Schoenstatt para conocer el Santuario. La Hermana Úrsula le habla a Monseñor sobre el Padre José Kentenich, que estaba en pleno exilio en Milwaukee. El Arzobispo, interesado en el tema -que desconocía-, le promete ocuparse de su rehabilitación cuando viaje a Roma para el Concilio Vaticano II. Durante los años 1962 y 1963, Monseñor Plaza trabaja en el Concilio junto a los Obispos schoenstattianos y en 1963, por pedido de la Hermana Úrsula, ordena sacerdote a Günther Boll.
En este tiempo, Monseñor le confiesa a la Hermana su sueño: «Aquella noche, luego de que usted me contara que el Padre Kentenich estaba acusado ante el Santo Oficio, vi un Santuario en el jardín de mi Curia y muchas Hermanas de María que entraban y salían». Llegado el año 1965, Monseñor quiere ofrecer el Santuario a la Virgen como precio por la liberación del Padre: todos tenían la convicción de que cuando finalizara la construcción el Padre quedaría libre. El 20 de enero de ese año comienza la nivelación del terreno, y ese mismo día la comunidad de los Padres de Schoenstatt regala el cuadro de la Mater para el Santuario de La Plata. El 11 de marzo, en presencia de Monseñor Plaza y de todas las Hermanas de María, se comienzan a cavar los cimientos. Dos días después, en un acto emotivo y único, las Hermanas se hunden en los fundamentos excavados, formando una cadena y expresando con este gesto que deseaban ser hundidas en la tierra como precio del rescate por la liberación del Padre y por la fecundidad del Santuario.
«Símbolo de la inserción de toda la Obra en la Iglesia»
El 30 de mayo las Hermanas peregrinan desde Buenos Aires llevando como piedra fundamental todos los aportes ofrecidos al Capital de Gracias. Entre los muros del Santuario que se estaba levantando, colocaron un documento y la oración que rezaron en ese momento ya marcaba la misión del futuro Santuario: «…Que este Santuario sea símbolo de una profunda inserción de toda la Obra en la Iglesia… Te pedimos no sólo el crecimiento espiritual de nuestra diócesis, sino también que la Obra de Schoenstatt florezca en La Plata y que traiga abundantes frutos a la sombra de la Catedral».
El 15 de agosto de 1965, a las 15.30 hs, Monseñor Plaza bendice e inaugura el Santuario, celebrando en él la primera Misa.
Nuestro Santuario tiene algunas originalidades que lo hacen único: no nace por voluntad o por vocación de la Familia, sino por decisión de un Obispo y además está construido en los jardines de la Curia platense. Pero lo que realmente lo hace único es que está a la «sombra de la Catedral», siendo sus cimientos tan profundos, que marcan la inserción de la Obra de Schoenstatt en el Corazón de la Iglesia.
Un mes más tarde, el 15 de septiembre, las Hermanas reciben un telegrama anunciando que el Padre había sido llamado a Roma. El 31 de octubre hacen una nueva peregrinación a pie desde Florencio Varela hasta la Catedral de La Plata, llevando en sus manos cadenas como símbolo de las cadenas que debían romperse para liberar al Padre y a la Obra. Al arribar al Santuario, ofrecen a la Mater el sacrificio de la marcha heroica. Al regreso a Nuevo Schoenstatt, la Hermana Úrsula recibe un telegrama en el que le dicen que el Padre había sido liberado.
Nos llena de alegría el poder festejar como Familia estos acontecimientos. Son, sin duda, el centro de todo el trabajo del año. Esto implica no solo festejar, sino también renovar nuestra misión, la de la Familia y la del Santuario, y proyectarnos hacia el futuro, hacia los próximos cincuenta años. Esta renovación significa asumir el compromiso de llevar a la vida la liberación del Padre, liberación que hacemos efectiva en nuestro actuar cotidiano, realizando «lo ordinario de manera extraordinaria». Esta es nuestra misión, y bien sabido es que «cuando uno tiene una misión debe cumplirla», sabiendo con absoluta certeza que «la Madre cuidará perfectamente».

Two days later, in an emotional and unique act, the Sisters sink into the excavated foundations, forming a chain and expressing with this gesture that they wanted to be sunk into the earth as the ransom price for the liberation of the Father and for the fertility of the Sanctuary.

On May 30, the Sisters make a pilgrimage from Buenos Aires carrying as their cornerstone all the contributions offered to the Capital of Grace. Between the walls of the Sanctuary that was being built, they placed a document and the prayer they prayed at that moment already marked the mission of the future Sanctuary: «...May this Sanctuary be a symbol of a deep insertion of the entire Work in the Church... We ask you "not only the spiritual growth of our diocese, but also that the Work of Schoenstatt flourishes in La Plata and brings abundant fruits in the shadow of the Cathedral."
On August 15, 1965, at 3:30 p.m., Monsignor Plaza blesses and inaugurates the Sanctuary, celebrating the first Mass there.
Our Sanctuary has some originalities that make it unique: it was not born by the will or vocation of the Family, but by the decision of a Bishop and it is also built in the gardens of the Curia of La Plata. But what really makes it unique is that it is in the "shadow of the Cathedral", its foundations being so deep that they mark the insertion of the Work of Schoenstatt in the Heart of the Church.
A month later, on September 15, the Sisters received a telegram announcing that Father had been called to Rome. On October 31, they make a new pilgrimage on foot from Florencio Varela to the Cathedral of La Plata, carrying chains in their hands as a symbol of the chains that had to be broken to free the Father and the Work. Upon arriving at the Sanctuary, they offer the Blessed Virgin the sacrifice of the heroic march. Upon returning to New Schoenstatt, Sister Úrsula receives a telegram telling her that Father had been released.
It fills us with joy to be able to celebrate these events as a Family. They are, without a doubt, the center of all the work of the year. This implies not only celebrating, but also renewing our mission, that of the Family and that of the Sanctuary, and projecting ourselves into the future, towards the next fifty years. This renewal means assuming the commitment to bring the Father's liberation to life, a liberation that we make effective in our daily actions, doing "the ordinary in an extraordinary way." This is our mission, and it is well known that “when one has a mission one must fulfill it,” knowing with absolute certainty that “the Mother will take care of it perfectly.”
