[EN] This carriage belonged to Mariana of Austria, second wife of Philip IV and queen regent until her son Charles II came of age.

It is one of the oldest surviving examples of the grand carrosse, a type of luxury carriage that France made fashionable at every European court. The body reflects the then-popular trend of “ebonising” or darkening wood to imitate ebony, and the rich carving is typical of Baroque taste. What made these carriages novel was the fact that they were completely closed, with glass windows and a swan’s neck shaft that allowed them to turn at a right angle. The body was suspended from leather straps or thorough-braces.

Materials used in its manufacture: Carved and stained walnut; palo santo wood (interior); iron, leather, glass; velvet embroidered with silver thread.
