Geschiedenis
Op de plaats van dit gebouw werd in 1897 een pakhuis in Lodewijk XIV-stijl gesloopt. Oorspronkelijk werd op deze locatie de bouw van de nieuwe Vlaamse Schouwburg voorzien, maar dit plan werd afgeblazen. In 1896 werd de ontwerpopdracht toegewezen door J. Van den Peereboom, de toenmalige minister van Spoorwegen, Post en Telegraaf, aan de architect Louis Cloquet in samenwerking met de provincie-architect Stéphane Mortier. Het bouwplan werd in 1898 gefinaliseerd. Het postgebouw zelf werd opgetrokken tussen 1900 en 1908. Het duurde nog tot oktober 1910 alvorens de postdiensten van Gent-centrum naar de Korenmarkt werden overgebracht. Ter gelegenheid van de wereldtentoonstelling van 1913 werden er twee tijdelijke postkantoren geopend.
In 1998 werd het gebouw verkocht door de Regie der Posterijen. Daarna was er op het gelijkvloers een winkelcentrum met daarboven appartementen. Sedert eind 2017 is de bovenverdieping ingericht als luxehotel terwijl er winkels gevestigd zijn op de gelijkvloerse verdieping.[1] Dit indrukwekkende gebouw maakt deel uit van een zone gevormd door de Sint-Michielsbrug begrensd door het huis Sint-Michiel en het voormalig postgebouw.
Het gebouw is beschermd als monument sinds 1999.

Bouwstijl
Het gebouw is opgetrokken in een eclectische stijl met overwegend neogotische en neorenaissance-invloeden, in navolging van de fraaie gevel van het Gildehuis der Vrije Schippers op de Graslei. Het heeft achthoekige torens met spitsen, waaronder de traptoren op de hoek met de Sterrenstraat en de toegangspartij ook met traptoren aan de Korenmarkt. Verder springt de 52 meter hoge uurwerktoren in het oog. De postduiven die op de muren geschilderd zijn verwijzen nog naar de oorspronkelijke functie van het gebouw. Ondanks deze traditionele elementen is er gebruikgemaakt van eigentijdse materialen en technieken. De hygiëne was een sterk aandachtspunt. De glas- en staalconstructies werden verstopt achter een kleurrijke natuursteen.
Geveldecoratie
De gevels zijn rijkelijk versierd met beelden, koppen en wapenschilden, meer dan 100 in het totaal. De geveldecoratie heeft een internationaal karakter met een uitbeelding van het toenmalige België en zijn kolonie, de vijf werelddelen, en de regerende staatshoofden van alle landen die destijds deel uitmaakten van de Wereldpostunie."

A warehouse in Louis XIV style was demolished on the site of this building in 1897. Originally, the construction of the new Flemish Theater was planned at this location, but this plan was cancelled. In 1896, the design assignment was assigned by J. Van den Peereboom, the then Minister of Railways, Post and Telegraph, to the architect Louis Cloquet in collaboration with the provincial architect Stéphane Mortier. The construction plan was finalized in 1898. The post building itself was built between 1900 and 1908. It was not until October 1910 that the postal services were transferred from the center of Ghent to the Korenmarkt. Two temporary post offices were opened on the occasion of the 1913 World Exhibition.
In 1998 the building was sold by the Post Office. Then there was a shopping center on the ground floor with apartments above. Since the end of 2017, the top floor has been furnished as a luxury hotel, while shops are located on the ground floor. This impressive building is part of a zone formed by the Sint-Michiels Bridge, bordered by the Sint-Michiel house and the former postal building.
The building has been protected as a monument since 1999.

Architectural style
The building is constructed in an eclectic style with predominantly neo-Gothic and neo-Renaissance influences, following the beautiful facade of the Gildehuis der Vrije Schippers on the Graslei. It has octagonal towers with spires, including the stair tower on the corner with Sterrenstraat and the entrance also with stair tower on Korenmarkt. Furthermore, the 52 meter high clock tower catches the eye. The carrier pigeons painted on the walls still refer to the original function of the building. Despite these traditional elements, contemporary materials and techniques have been used. Hygiene was a strong point of attention. The glass and steel constructions were hidden behind colorful natural stone.
Facade decoration
The facades are richly decorated with statues, heads and coats of arms, more than 100 in total. The facade decoration has an international character with a depiction of the then Belgium and its colony, the five continents, and the reigning heads of state of all countries that were part of the Universal Postal Union at the time."
