"Junto al barrio de San Francisco, y ya a las afueras de la población, se ubica la ermita de San Antón. Esta ermita, según textos parroquiales, ya existía en Caudete desde 1597.
La devoción a San Antonio Abad estuvo muy arraigada en las antiguas comunidades agrícolas, por tratarse de un santo protector de los animales en un momento en que las economías domésticas tenían en éstos uno de sus principales sustentos y fuerza de trabajo.
No obstante, según un artículo publicado por Manuel Beltrán, esta ermita tuvo en su origen un propósito muy distinto. Según el citado autor, la letra griega T (tau), también llamada Cruz de Tau o Cruz de San Antón, que preside el altar mayor de la ermita, es un símbolo de los Hermanos Hospitalarios de San Antón, que se encargaban de mantener una red de albergues de peregrinos".
