[ES] “En plena Plaza de las Cortes se alza el majestuoso edificio que poco tiene que envidiar a otros grandes hoteles internacionales pero el hotel de lujo ha vivido mucha historia, tanta que llegó a convertirse en un hospital durante la Guerra Civil española.
Por este hotel han pasado celebridades como Albert Enstein, Marie Curie, Salvador Dalí y García Lorca pero no siempre acogió a gente que venía a Madrid a pasar unos días sino que este hotel tuvo que ver la muerte y la guerra desde dentro.
En 1936, al estallar la Guerra Civil española, el hotel fue transformado en hospital de sangre para las tropas republicanas, concretamente se trasladó a su interior el Hospital Militar de Carabanchel, ya que el barrio de Carabanchel y sus vecinos pelearon para que Madrid no quedase en manos de los sublevados. De hecho, cuando estos últimos consiguieron avanzar por el barrio de Carabanchel el Gobierno decidió trasladarse a Valencia ya que lo consideraba más seguro.
En la planta baja se instalaron los quirófanos de urgencias y se dispusieron en sus dependencias hasta 800 camas. Hasta dos bombas cayeron en las inmediaciones del Palace, ninguna de ellas por suerte explosionó.
Las personas que se alojaban en el hotel tuvieron que vivir lo que estaba ocurriendo en España y conocieron con horror el bombardeo por parte de escuadrillas de la Legión Cóndor de la Luftwaffe, la aviación nazi, contra un circo instalado en el cercano paseo del Prado.
Muchos años después, concretamente en el año 1981 el hotel albergó una parte de la historia de nuestro país: el golpe de estado del 23F, ya que se convirtió en el cuartel general de prensa y vivió la negociación con los golpistas.”
